Pennsylvania German 19th Century Manuscripts
From Pennsylvania German manuscripts we can learn about the variety of weave structures and patterns that were used by handweavers to produce linens and coverlets in the late eighteenth and the nineteenth century. We can also gather information about the who, what, and where extant coverlets were woven, when we match the pattern and weave of a coverlet with a weaver’s draft. Both the manuscripts and the coverlets provide a link to the textile arts of the Pennsylvania German weavers.
