Fabulous Fringe Workshop

On October 2nd & 3rd, I want to share with you the many fringes I have found on early coverlets and counterpanes. Some of the fringes are basic and others are elaborate. Once I have determined how a fringe was woven, I documented my findings and followed up by weaving samples. Next, I wrote work sheets on how to weave the various fringes including my drawings on how to manipulate the weft. Finally, I wove these fringes and applied them to my woven coverlets. I found it is important to test out my theories.

As part of the workshop I will give a PowerPoint presentation with photos of the early coverlet and counterpane fringes. I will also bring along some of the coverlets I have woven. For more information go to the redstoneglen.com/classes

Master Class via Zoom

Unfortunately the workshops I described in my past two blogs have been cancelled, because of the pandemic. However, I am pleased that I had the opportunity on July 9th to give my presentation entitled “A Master’s Class in American Handwoven Coverlets” to the Hudson Mohawk Weavers’ Guild via a Zoom connection. As many of you may know Zoom is a “leader in modern enterprise video and audio communications” according to their website. Thanks to the platform I was able to give my PowerPoint presentation and interact with the members of the guild.

I belong to the Central Pennsylvania Guild of Handweavers and we have had Zoom meetings the past two months. On June 3rd Margery Erickson’s topic was “Weaving Zapotec Dreams in Oaxaca. On July 1st Sara Bixler’s presentation was entitled “Weaving with Fine Threads.” Both presentations were excellent, and I recommend them if you are looking for presenters for your guild’s zoom meeting. I applaud the guilds for quickly figuring out how to stay in touch with their members and provide new learning opportunities. The zoom platform provides the guilds with the chance to have speakers from all over the country.
